Govt approves 675 e-buses across 8 cities
Jaipur, Feb. 27 -- The Rajasthan government has approved the operation of 675 electric buses in eight major cities under the PM e-Bus Sewa scheme, marking a major push towards clean and sustainable urban transport.
An official release states that the cities covered are Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Kota, Bikaner, Bhilwara, Alwar and Ajmer.
As per the city-wise allocation, Jaipur will receive 150 buses; Jodhpur, Ajmer and Kota 100 each; Bikaner 75; and Alwar, Bhilwara and Udaipur 50 each.
The introduction of these e-buses is expected to significantly reduce pollution, save fuel and strengthen urban public transport systems across the state.
In Jaipur, trial runs of 9-metre and 12-metre category buses began on Thursday ahead of regular operations of the first batch of 150 buses. The trials will continue till February 28, 2026.
The 9-metre e-bus has seating capacity for 25 passengers, one wheelchair user and the driver, while the 12-metre bus can accommodate 31 passengers, one wheelchair user and the driver. Both models are equipped with disabled-friendly features to promote inclusive mobility. Additional facilities include panic buttons, passenger display boards, speakers, driver display panels, CCTV cameras and automatic passenger counting systems.
Jaipur City Transport Services Limited (JCTSL) signed an agreement with the selected firm on July 7, 2025. Regular operations of the e-buses in Jaipur are proposed to begin from April 2026. The required charging infrastructure will be developed by the selected contractor as per prescribed technical standards.
Technical evaluation of the trial runs is being jointly conducted by expert teams from JCTSL and Centre for Railway Information Systems to ensure compliance with safety, quality and operational efficiency benchmarks.
