Jaipur, July 1 -- Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday urged the state government to make the terms of the newly signed memorandum of agreement (MoA) on the Yamuna Water project with Haryana public. He said the pact directly concerned the state's interests and warned against compromises on securing the state's rightful share of water. "The people of Rajasthan have every right to know the terms on which this agreement has been signed, as it directly concerns the state's interests," said Gehlot, adding that the earlier Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on February 17, 2024, was also kept under wraps until after the Lok Sabha elections. He said it later revealed a provision that Haryana would first receive 24,000 cusecs of water, with the remaining allocated to Rajasthan. "If the new MoA contains a similar provision, it goes against the spirit of the 1994 Yamuna water-sharing agreement, which clearly provides that water should be distributed among all participating states on a pro rata basis, according to availability. No state has a unilateral or preferential claim," he said. Gehlot urged the government to release the signed MoA immediately. "Keeping such an important document hidden from the public is against democratic principles. Rajasthan's interests are paramount, and no compromise on our water rights is acceptable," he said. The senior Congress leader maintained that the debate over whether the document was an MoU or an MoA was secondary. "If Rajasthan gets Yamuna water, nobody will be happier than me or the people of the state," he said, adding that implementing the 1994 agreement, which stayed pending under both Congress and BJP governments in Rajasthan and Haryana, would be historic....
