Gehlot slams govt over delay in local body polls
Jaipur, April 15 -- Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday accused the state government of delaying panchayat and urban local body elections, urging the President and Governor to intervene immediately.
Addressing reporters at his residence in Jaipur, Gehlot said leaders across the political spectrum celebrate BR Ambedkar's birth anniversary, yet many in power ignore his principles. "Dr Ambedkar's contribution to the making of the Constitution is etched in history. But those who never believed in his ideals are now in governance and celebrating his Jayanti, while violating the very Constitution," he said.
He accused the state government of failing to hold panchayat, municipal, and cooperative elections-pillars of the constitutional framework Ambedkar envisioned. "If they truly believed in the Constitution, these elections would have been held on time. Even cooperative elections have not been conducted for nearly a decade," he said.
He called for immediate intervention. "The President and the Governor should intervene in this matter. Elections should have been held on time. Otherwise, what moral right does this government have to remain in power?" Gehlot said.
He concluded that celebrating Ambedkar's birth anniversary without following his principles shows a clear gap between words and actions.

Pilot criticised the administrative machinery, saying officials seem insensitive to public grievances. "Administrative officers are not concerned about the sentiments and problems of the people. Key positions like sarpanch, councillor, and mayor are being kept vacant because the BJP fears losing elections," he alleged.
BJP spokesperson Ram Lal Sharma said the government plans to conduct panchayat and local body elections once it receives the OBC Commission report. He accused the Congress of weakening democracy, claiming it sidelined the democratic setup in 2008 and 2018 by merging MLAs elected on BSP tickets into the Congress....
