Jaipur, April 22 -- Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday raised questions over safety standards at the Pachpadra refinery and demanding a thorough investigation into the incident.
Addressing the media at his residence, Gehlot said that a fire in a newly built refinery raises serious concerns and indicates possible lapses. "There is no question of a fire breaking out in a new refinery. Somewhere, there has been a mistake," he said.
Citing an Australian expert, Gehlot claimed that such incidents are usually common in older refineries.
"The expert said fires may occur in refineries that are 20-25 years old, but not in newly constructed ones. In the last 25 years, such incidents are rare in new facilities," he said.
He suggested that the incident may have been caused either due to lapses on the part of the government or due to haste in commissioning the project.
"It appears there may have been undue pressure to start operations soon, which could have compromised safety protocols," he added.
Calling the incident unfortunate, he urged the government to conduct a detailed and transparent probe to ascertain the exact cause. He also cautioned against misinformation, noting that while videos of refinery fires often circulate internationally, they may not necessarily be related to this particular incident....
