Jaipur, Oct. 2 -- Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday held the Rajasthan University administration responsible for the violence during an RSS "Shastra Poojan" event, asking why such a programme was allowed on campus in the first place. Gehlot, in a post on social media, held the university administration responsible for allowing the RSS programme inside the campus. He alleged that police and RSS workers attacked National Students' Union of India (NSUI) members, while videos showed policemen vandalising vehicles belonging to student leaders. "The violence perpetrated by the RSS and the police against NSUI activists at Rajasthan University yesterday is the fault of the university administration. Why did the university administration allow the RSS to conduct a weapons worship ceremony on campus?" he asked. Gehlot said he had spoken to the Jaipur police commissioner, expressing displeasure over the "unjustified action" and demanded immediate release of detained NSUI workers, including state president Vinod Jakhar. He also spoke to an injured student, Ravindra Meghwal, and urged doctors to ensure proper treatment. Congress general secretary and former deputy CM Sachin Pilot condemned the police lathi-charge on NSUI workers, calling it "brutal" and "an attack on students' democratic rights." He said it was unfortunate an educational institution was turned into a political platform by allowing the RSS to hold a weapons worship programme. "Instead of protecting students, the police targeted them, while RSS workers assaulted NSUI members in their presence," Pilot said, adding it shows a rule of law collapse in the state. Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully said NSUI members were peacefully protesting when RSS members attacked them with sticks while the police remained a mute spectator. "This is not democracy, it is dictatorship," Jully said, accusing the police of deliberately damaging NSUI vehicles at the behest of those in power. BJP spokesperson Laxmikant Bharadwaj said, "Gehlot is making baseless statements. Permission was taken by ABVP activists, who are students of the university. NSUI created the ruckus, as it is the Congress's habit to suppress voices through violence."...
