Gehlot accuses govt of corruption in state's sanitary napkins scheme
Jaipur, April 29 -- Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday accused the BJP government of corruption in a scheme to provide sanitary napkins to girls and women, and demanded a probe.
Raising the issue of poor quality sanitary napkins being distributed in schools, Gehlot said the Congress government had launched the 'Udaan' scheme to ensure menstrual hygiene and dignity for women and girls.
"Our Congress government undertook an innovative initiative, 'Udaan Scheme,' to ensure the menstrual hygiene and dignity of the state's women and girls," he said. Validating the vision, the Supreme Court also issued directions to provide free sanitary pads to female students in schools across the country, he added.
"However, it is deeply distressing to witness today the reality of the BJP, a party that makes grand pronouncements regarding 'Nari Shakti' (women's empowerment)," he said.
The former chief minister alleged that they kept the scheme suspended for nearly two years, and the current BJP government is engaging in corruption in this scheme.
Alleging that substandard sanitary napkins are being distributed to girls that pose a serious risk of infections, he said, the government must institute a high-level inquiry, take strict action against those found guilty and ensure the immediate provision of high-quality sanitary napkins.
BJP spokesperson Ram Lal Sharma said, "It is the Gehlot government who started such corruption. Our government has launched a probe and is taking action into the matter."...
