JODHPUR, May 17 -- A 26-year-old woman has allegedly died by suicide in Jodhpur, more than a month after she had filed a gang rape complaint against eight people for sexually exploiting and blackmailing her and her elder sister, who had also died by suicide on March 20, an official familiar with the matter said. She reportedly consumed poison atop a water tank on Friday, the official said. Her death triggered protests outside the hospital, demanding action against the accused and police personnel allegedly responsible for negligence in the case. According to the complaint filed by the woman on April 11, she had accused eight named persons of gangrape, blackmail and intimidation. In the complaint, she alleged that her elder sister had been sexually exploited for nearly four years after one of the accused allegedly recorded objectionable videos and used them for blackmail. She said her sister was repeatedly assaulted and extorted by the accused before she died by suicide on March 20. The complainant further alleged that after her sister's death, the accused started threatening and blackmailing her as well by referring to the videos. She claimed that she too was sexually assaulted multiple times and was pressured to withdraw the case. She had also alleged in her complaint that despite registration of the FIR on April 11, no effective action was taken against the accused for 33 days. Family members alleged that the accused continued to move freely despite the FIR and that no arrests had been made. Additional superintendent of police (Rural) Bhopal Singh Lakhawat said on Saturday, 'The body of the deceased has been brought to a Jodhpur mortuary for autopsy. We are waiting for the FIR from the family members. Once the FIR is received, a prompt investigation will be initiated. The case registered earlier on April 11 is being investigated by the Circle Officer.'...
