BIKANER, Sept. 20 -- A 70-year-old former sarpanch was brutally killed, allegedly by his nephew, in Dhirdesar Chotiyan village under Sridungargarh police station, police said on Friday. The victim, Megharam Chotia, who served as village head from 2005 to 2010, was found dead early Friday morning. Police suspect his nephew Balbir Chotia, who is absconding, as the prime accused. Investigations reveal that the Chotia family had been locked in a bitter property dispute since Megharam's tenure as sarpanch. The conflict centered around ownership of a shop and had repeatedly turned violent. Nearly a year ago, Megharam was allegedly assaulted and looted at home by his nephews during one such flare-up. On Thursday night, another quarrel broke out between the two sides. Later, Megharam and his wife Rami Devi went to sleep Police believe that sometime after midnight, the attacker struck Megharam on the head with an axe. Police have not yet registered an FIR, but a search operation is underway to nab the fugitive....
