Bharatpur, Sept. 27 -- A forest department team was attacked with stones and gunfire by people involved in alleged illegal mining in Bharatpur, forest officials said on Saturday. The attack came five days after a forest ranger was killed in Pratapgarh in an incident linked to illegal mining. The Bharatpur attack took place late Friday night near Kondapura village in the Gadhi Bajna police station area. Acting on information about illegal mining in the nearby hills, a team led by forester Rahul Foujdar raided the site and seized a tractor-trolley and a compressor machine. Foujdar said, "the team was taking the seized equipment to the Kot Thana forest check post when villagers and illegal miners attacked it near the Siddh Baba temple. They pelted stones and opened fire at the team." "The forest team fired two rounds to escape", Foujdar said "About a kilometre later, the group surrounded the team again and took away the tractor-trolley and compressor machine." Bhagwan Singh, the forest check post in-charge, suffered a leg fracture in the attack and was referred to the district hospital. Foujdar said a complaint had been lodged against the attackers. Gadhi Bajna police station in-charge Shyam Lal said, "legal action would be taken against those responsible for the illegal mining and the attack." In Pratapgarh on the night of September 21, ranger Pratap Singh Chundawat went with a forest team to Vankhand Sukkad-Mohanpura Talai after receiving information about illegal mining. The team found a JCB, a tractor and a dumper at the site and stopped the vehicles. Police said the driver of a soil-laden dumper then tried to flee. Chundawat pursued the vehicle, and the driver ran him over when he tried to stop it. The ranger died from his injuries....
