Farmers protest against Ajmer irrigation project
Ajmer, Aug. 13 -- Hundreds of farmers from four villages staged a protest in Ajmer on Wednesday against the Singla-Rupangarh Irrigation Project.
Under the banner of the Singla-Rupangarh Irrigation Project Affected Farmers Struggle Committee, nearly 100 tractors travelled to Ajmer. Police stopped the tractor convoy about 1.5 km from the Collectorate. Farmers staged a sit-in and demanded the presence of the collector.
The farmers demanded cancellation of the award issued on July 8, 1994. They claimed not a single drop of water has reached the Singla dam since construction, making the acquisition of thousands of bighas of fertile agricultural land unjustified.
The farmers later surrounded the Collectorate and submitted a memorandum to the district collector. They also warned of an indefinite hunger strike if the demands are not addressed....
