Jodhpur, Sept. 2 -- Former Congress MLA Divya Maderna ended her overnight sit-in outside the returning officer's (RO) office in Mathania on Tuesday after the district administration gave her a written assurance that the alleged violation of election procedures would be investigated. The protest began on Monday evening following a dispute on the final day of nominations for the 2026 Mathania municipal elections. Maderna alleged that BJP MLA Bhairaram Siol and a party candidate were allowed to enter the RO's office after the 3pm nomination deadline, while a Congress candidate who was already inside was treated rudely and forced out. Maderna and her supporters remained outside the office throughout the night as several rounds of talks were held with administrative officials. A meeting with senior officials late on Monday night failed to resolve the matter, prompting her to continue the protest. Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasara backed Maderna and demanded an impartial inquiry by the Election Commission. He questioned under whose authority the BJP legislator was allowed to remain in the RO's office after the deadline and alleged that different rules were being applied to the ruling party and the opposition. On Tuesday, the administration agreed to investigate the role of the local station house officer and the returning officer in the alleged incident. It also assured Maderna that police and administrative officials would not unnecessarily interfere in the election process. Officials said two additional observers each would be deployed in the Mathania and Tinwari municipal areas. The election process in both municipalities would also be conducted under the direct supervision of an additional district magistrate.
