Jaipur, Aug. 13 -- Chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma on Wednesday described the struggle of "democracy fighters" during the Emergency as a historic chapter in the defence of democracy and said their sacrifice and commitment should inspire the younger generation. Addressing a 'Democracy Fighters' Honour Ceremony' at the Chief Minister's residence, Sharma said the younger generation must understand that the democratic system it enjoys today was made possible by the sacrifices of those who fought to protect democratic values during the Emergency. He urged "democracy fighters" to share their experiences with society and encourage people to remain committed to democratic values. Sharma also called upon each of them to document their life experiences in writing, saying the state government would take steps to preserve their contributions. He said India attained independence after the sacrifices of several generations, while democracy fighters faced difficult circumstances during Emergency and fought to protect democratic institutions. "Those who witnessed and endured the Emergency have the experience and ability to provide direction to society and the nation," Sharma said, adding that Rajasthan should benefit from their experience. "Nationalism as an ideology has grown into a vast banyan tree through their penance and struggle," Sharma said, emphasising the need to preserve the history of their contribution. Referring to developments since 2014, Sharma said the country had been progressing rapidly under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. He said the economy was becoming stronger, welfare and development schemes for the poor had expanded and India's stature had increased globally. Sharma said the vision of nation-building that democracy fighters had nurtured was being realised under the guidance of the PM.
