Bhilwara, Aug. 7 -- A suspected drug smuggler was killed in an encounter with the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) on Wednesday night, police said, adding that an accomplice of the deceased was also arrested. According to police, the ANTF received confidential information that a large consignment of narcotics was being transported from Pratapgarh to Jodhpur. Acting on it, the team set up a checkpoint on the bypass road in Pur police station area. When officers signalled a car to stop, the driver allegedly attempted to flee. During the chase, the smugglers opened fire on the police team, damaging the front windshield of the vehicle. In retaliation, the task force fired to stop the car, police said. During the encounter, 35-year-old Ganpat, a resident of Bhopalgarh in Jodhpur, sustained serious bullet injuries. He was rushed to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His accomplice, Mahendra Godara, tried to escape but was arrested after a cordon, police said. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a large quantity of poppy husk and other suspected contraband. Police suspect that another vehicle carrying narcotics was also involved in the operation and are investigating the possibility. Following the incident, Bhilwara superintendent of police Sagar Rana and deputy superintendent Rahul Joshi reached Pur police station and reviewed the situation. Police officers said that Ganpat had more than a dozen criminal cases registered against him in various police stations and had been involved in drug trafficking and other criminal activities for a long time.
