Dotasra hits at BJP over delay in implementation
Jaipur, April 20 -- Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the BJP, accusing it of creating a "web of lies and confusion" over women's reservation and using the issue for political gains.
Addressing a press conference, Dotasra questioned the Centre's intent, pointing out that although the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam was passed in 2023 with Congress support, its implementation was delayed for nearly three years. He said the law was notified only late on April 16, 2026, after prolonged inaction.
The Congress leader alleged that linking the reservation to a fresh census and delimitation exercise was a deliberate tactic to postpone its benefits.
Dotasra noted that similar reservations for women in Panchayati Raj institutions and urban bodies were implemented in 1992 without such preconditions.
The party has demanded that 33% reservation be immediately implementation to the existing 543 seats of the Lok Sabha.
Dotasra also stressed the need for a caste census to ensure fair representation for women from Other Backward Classes (OBCs). He termed the BJP's stand as another "jumla" aimed at diverting attention from pressing issues like inflation and unemployment.
Drawing a contrast between the two parties, he said, "The BJP has never had a woman as its national president, while the Congress had elected its first female president over a century ago".
He cited leaders such as Annie Besant, Sarojini Naidu, Indira Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi as examples of women leadership within the party. He also credited Congress with giving the country its first woman Prime Minister (Indira Gandhi), first woman President (Pratibha Patil), and first woman Lok Sabha Speaker (Meira Kumar).
Targeting the BJP-led central government further, Dotasra alleged that the proposed delimitation exercise was being used to redraw the political map in BJP's favour. He cited instances in Assam, Jammu & Kashmir, and Rajasthan, claiming that arbitrary delimitation was carried out despite public opposition.
In a direct attack on the state leadership, Dotasra accused the chief minister of merely reading out a "script sent from Delhi." He said if the government truly respected women, deputy chief minister Diya Kumari would have been made the chief minister.
He further alleged that despite tall claims of women empowerment, Diya Kumari was sidelined within the government, not allowed to speak at press briefings, and excluded from key decisions, including budget discussions and departmental meetings.
Dotasra asserted that the Congress would continue its fight for women's rights "from the streets to Parliament" until the reservation is implemented fully and without delay.
The 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill was defeated, with a 298-230 final tally in the Lok Sabha on April 17....
