Day 2 of truck strike hits supply chains in state
Jaipur, July 15 -- The deadlock between the Rajasthan government and transport operators continued on Tuesday as an indefinite statewide truck strike entered its second day, with transporters rejecting the government's revised Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTDs) and vowing to intensify their agitation if their demands remain unresolved.
The strike, called by the Rajasthan Truck Transport Sangharsh Samiti over issues related to mandatory VLTD installation, permit procedures and e-detection challans, has brought freight movement across the state to a standstill. Transporters claimed that nearly 50,000 trucks have stopped operating, disrupting the supply of fruits, vegetables, cement, steel, groceries and other essential goods, besides affecting industrial units.
Following a meeting between Transport Department officials and representatives of transport associations at the Transport Headquarters on Monday, the government issued a fresh SOP late that night in an attempt to address the operators' concerns.
"If no solution is reached, transporters will also launch a 'Jail Bharo' movement," Suresh Poonia, spokesperson for the Rajasthan Truck Transport Sangharsh Samiti, said....
