Dangi files RS nomination, set for second term
Jaipur, June 6 -- Congress candidate Neeraj Dangi on Friday filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections from Rajasthan, virtually securing a second consecutive term in the Upper House due to favourable numbers for the party in the state assembly.
Dangi submitted his nomination before the Returning Officer in the Rajasthan assembly in the presence of several senior Congress leaders, including Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully, state Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra and former chief minister Ashok Gehlot.
The Congress has once again reposed faith in Dangi, a Dalit leader from the Meghwal community, by nominating him for a second term. With the party holding 67 MLAs in the 200-member Rajasthan assembly, Dangi's victory is considered almost certain. A candidate requires 51 votes to win a Rajya Sabha seat, giving Congress enough strength to comfortably secure one seat.
The ruling BJP, on the other hand, has the numbers to win two of the three Rajya Sabha seats being contested. Political observers believe the election is likely to remain a straightforward contest based on existing legislative strength, leaving little room for surprises.
Dangi, who is regarded as a close associate of former CM Ashok Gehlot, has also strengthened his ties with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge during his tenure in Parliament. Party insiders say Kharge strongly backed Dangi's candidature, which played a key role in securing him a second consecutive nomination.
The renomination is being viewed as part of the Congress' strategy to retain its traditional Dalit support base while also balancing internal political equations within the party. Dangi's parliamentary experience and organisational background are said to have worked in his favour. Dangi began his political career through the Youth Congress and has held several organisational positions over the years. Despite losing three assembly elections from the Reodar constituency in 2003, 2008 and 2018, the Congress rewarded his loyalty by sending him to the Rajya Sabha in 2020.
Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha elections in Rajasthan appear headed towards an uncontested outcome. The BJP is unlikely to field a third candidate, while the Congress is not expected to nominate another candidate. If no additional names enter the fray, all seats could effectively be decided on June 11, the last date for withdrawal of nominations....
