Dalit man kills self over 'theft' claims in Ajmer
Jaipur, Feb. 27 -- A 38-year-old Dalit man in Ajmer died by suicide on Wednesday night, allegedly driven by despair after villagers falsely accused him of stealing valuables from a local temple, police said.
Inspector Surendra Singh of Madanganj police station said: "The victim was a native of Rajaredi village. His family members said that since the last few days, the villagers had been bullying him and accusing him stealing, which caused him extreme stress. We also recovered a note from his belongings where he stated that he was being wrongly framed as a thief."
The unmarried victim worked as a driver in Ajmer. "On Wednesday night, he killed himself. Next morning, his brother recovered his body while he also found a video message sent by his brother through WhatsApp," Singh said.
Police reached the spot, sent the body for autopsy and lodged an FIR under section 194 (suicide) of BNSS based on the brother's statement. "Around 15 days ago, an unidentified person stole some expensive jewellery from the nearby Tejaji temple. In the video, he told his brother that he did not steal anything from the temple and that the villagers had been accusing him falsely."
In his note, recovered from the room, the victim urged police to find the actual culprit. "An FIR was lodged against an unidentified person few days ago after the theft was reported in that temple. But the police neither called the victim nor disturbed him. We are checking if any villager was bullying him. Probe is underway," Singh said.
The victim's brother told reporters that the villagers and police had constantly disturbed his sibling since the theft. "Everybody has a video of the CCTV footage so everyone knows that the thief is a different person. But the villagers had constantly been accusing him of committing that crime as they believed that the actual culprit was known to my brother. My brother was stressed and now he died by suicide," he said....
