Jaipur, Aug. 2 -- The state government on Saturday ordered officials to improve the referral system for pregnant women across govt hospitals, issue Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to treat anaemia and hypertension complications and ensure that high-risk cases were shifted to higher health facilities a day or two before delivery was expected. The development follows a series of maternal deaths reported from government hospitals across Rajasthan over the past three months. Addressing a review meeting of services to ensure safe motherhood, chief secretary V Srinivas ordered the issuance of a circular to streamline operations of the Safe Delivery and Janani Express services across the state. Medical college principals, hospital superintendents and other senior health officials were present. The recent spate of maternal deaths spanned multiple districts, including Bhilwara, Kota, Bikaner, Jodhpur and Banswara. Srinivas sought a detailed account of one of the most recent cases in Bhilwara from the gynaecologist and ANM posted at Shahpura Community Health Centre. He also reviewed the implementation of the Prasav Sakhi initiative and directed instructed officials to intensify screening and treatment efforts in Beawar, Chittorgarh, Baran, Jhalawar and Salumber, which were identified for special focus. Reviewing emergency maternal healthcare services, he assessed surgical protocols, drug availability and the operation of the 104 and 108 ambulance services. He said that no pregnant woman should die due to the unavailability of blood and instructed officials to organise special blood donation camps wherever required. He also sought updates from the principals of medical colleges in Bikaner, Ajmer, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Kota on delivery management, ICU facilities and treatment protocols for high-risk pregnancies....
