Jaipur, Oct. 6 -- Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee president Govind Singh Dotasra and Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully on Monday submitted a memorandum to Director General of Police Rajeev Sharma, seeking an inquiry and action against police officers for their alleged role during the recent local body elections. They also urged the DGP to ensure that police personnel remain impartial during the upcoming panchayat elections. After meeting the DGP, Dotasra said the Congress delegation had submitted evidence related to individual cases and sought action against the officers concerned. He alleged that the police had acted under political pressure during the civic polls and warned that a similar approach during the panchayat elections could create further tension. Dotasra alleged that police officers had been involved in attempts to influence councillors and that officers were present at locations where councillors had been kept together during the election process. He also alleged that several officers were transferred recently because they had not acted according to the BJP's wishes. Citing Khatu Shyamji, Dotasra claimed that the SP, DSP, SDM and CI were transferred because they did not work under political pressure. He further alleged that officials in the chief minister's Office were monitoring developments and that BJP leaders from Delhi had exerted influence over the administration. Dotasra also alleged that prospective candidates for the panchayat elections were being threatened with action against their families, transfers of relatives employed in government service and disruption to their businesses. He said the DGP had assured the delegation that appropriate directions would be issued to ensure that police officers did not become part of political activity and remained focused on maintaining law and order. Dotasra also claimed that the BJP would face public opposition in the panchayat elections, alleging that voters were angry over the conduct of the local body polls. Jully said the police's role during the civic elections had raised serious concerns. He alleged that instead of being limited to maintaining law and order, police personnel were used to influence or secure councillors. He said the Congress had submitted evidence to the DGP and demanded an impartial inquiry into the conduct of the officers involved. The BJP rejected the Congress allegations, saying the opposition party was attempting to politicise the functioning of the police and administration after its performance in the local body elections. State BJP secretary Ekta Agarwal said the Congress should respect the constitutional institutions and accept the electoral mandate instead of making unsubstantiated allegations against police officers. "The police personnel were deployed during the local body elections to maintain law and order and ensure peaceful polling and counting. Any complaint regarding the conduct of an individual officer should be examined through the appropriate mechanism and action taken on the basis of evidence."...
