CM meets PM Modi amid cabinet rejig speculation
Jaipur, Oct. 28 -- Rajasthan chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday, triggering intense speculation about a possible cabinet reshuffle and long-pending political appointments in the state. Though officially termed a post-Diwali courtesy meeting, people aware of the matter suggest that key political issues were also discussed during the interaction.
According to people aware of the development, the meeting was "largely a courtesy call," similar to recent visits made by Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta.
However, the discussion reportedly also touched upon the much-awaited cabinet expansion in Rajasthan, along with the appointment of party workers and leaders to various boards, corporations, and commissions.
A senior BJP leader familiar with the matter said, "Like Gujarat, a major reshuffle can also be expected in Rajasthan soon. More than 10,000 BJP leaders and workers are likely to get political appointments after the Bihar elections." The state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reportedly started preparing for over 100 such appointments across different boards and corporations.
Party insiders claim that leaders from the Vasundhara Raje camp are also expected to find a place in the new appointments, in an attempt to maintain internal balance within the party. Similarly, recent Congress turncoats such as Lalchand Kataria and Rajendra Yadav are also said to be in contention for key posts.
Many of the positions in the state's boards and commissions carry ministerial status, with salaries ranging from Rs.20,000 to Rs.1.2 lakh per month. Since the Bhajan Lal Sharma government assumed office, political appointments have been made in only nine such bodies - a move that has left many BJP workers disgruntled.
Speculation over political appointments in Rajasthan has been ongoing since the formation of the Bhajan Lal Sharma government in December 2023. Just before the Lok Sabha elections, seven senior leaders were given key political positions, followed by a few more appointments in various boards and commissions. Notably, on August 2, 2025, former minister Arun Chaturvedi was appointed as the chairman of the State Finance Commission.
Political analysts believe the government aims to use these appointments strategically to address internal dissatisfaction ahead of the upcoming panchayat and municipal elections. "The BJP leadership wants to send a message of inclusivity and reward loyalty while energizing the cadre before local polls," said a political observer.
During his meeting with the Prime Minister, Sharma also briefed him about Rajasthan's development vision aligned with the national goal of Viksit Bharat @2047. He informed Modi that under his leadership, the state government has prepared a Viksit Rajasthan @2047 Vision Document, focusing on youth, women, farmers, and the poor - reflecting the aspirations of Viksit Bharat @2047.The document, which was approved in the state cabinet meeting held in August, envisions holistic growth across sectors to make Rajasthan a fully developed state by 2047.
While officials continue to downplay the political significance of the meeting, BJP circles in Jaipur are abuzz with expectations that major political appointments and a cabinet reshuffle could follow soon after the Bihar Assembly elections - marking the next big political move by the Bhajan Lal Sharma government....
