Clashes erupt over possession of temple land in Bharatpur distt
Bharatpur, March 1 -- A dispute erupted on Saturday between people from two villages over the possession of temple land in Bharatpur district, police said.
An officer aware of the matter said that the dispute centres around a particular temple in Barso village where people from nearby Ghasaula village have also prayed for years. On Saturday, villagers from Ghasaula installed a board denoting the land as donated land, which people from Barso reportedly objected to and subsequently attempted to remove, spurring the clashes. Police had to initiate a lathi charge to clear the area, said the officer.
The group from Ghausala has claimed that the land was donated in 1963 by a resident of their village. The Barso group has claimed that the land was bought and not donated.
The matter is currently under investigation, said a police officer aware of the matter....
