Bikaner, Sept. 17 -- A video purportedly made by an Indian student from Bikaner studying in Russia has thrown light on an allegedly mounting crisis of Indian students being cheated into joining the Russian Army and sent to fight on the Ukraine frontlines. The video, which surfaced on social media recently, shows 24-year-old Ajay Kumar Godara purportedly recounting his experience with the Russian military. Godara had left India on a study visa in November 2024. HT has seen and independently verified the video's content. In the clip, Godara is purportedly heard saying, "We were sent into the war against Ukraine. Our group came under aerial attack - drones and missiles were fired. There were four of us in a group- one died, two fled, and I lost my way. Russian army personnel found me after eight days of looking for my battalion and handed me over to the military police." He is also heard purportedly revealing his location- Selydove (a coal-mining town in Ukraine's Donetsk Oblast under Russian control since late 2024.) A separate video also shows two other men purportedly narrating similar experiences of deceit. They said they were recruited on the pretext of jobs as drivers and cooks but were made to sign documents in Russian without understanding their contents. "Since we didn't know the language, we signed the papers. There was no training; now they are sending us to the border," a man identified as Sandeep is heard saying in one video. The problem has reached the Centre. According to Rajasthan's food and civil supplies minister Sumit Godara, the problem was flagged to him by a family in his constituency, after which he relayed the information to Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who in turn forwarded it to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Indian Embassy in Moscow. Presently, the men's families remain anxious. Ajay's brother Prakash, who has been camping in Delhi, said: "This is not just about Ajay. Dozens of Indian youths are trapped. We want the government to act before it is too late." In villages like Arjansar in Bikaner, the mood is grim as families appeal directly to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and external affairs minister S Jaishankar for urgent negotiations with Russian authorities. "Ajay left home with the hope of building a future, not to die in a foreign war," a family member said. Ajay's father, Mahaveer Prasad, said: "He went to study but was pushed into war. We fear for his life." His mother added, "We cannot sleep at night thinking of our children on the battlefield." Families claim that the men's passports and documents were seized, leaving them unable to return....
