Barmer/Jaisalmer/Balotra/Paliwal/Jalore/Sirohi, Sept. 22 -- The BJP won a majority of the key mayor, chairman and chairperson posts in western Rajasthan on Monday, securing victories in Barmer, Pali, Jaisalmer, Balotra and several other urban local bodies. The Congress won in Jalore, Sirohi and Pokaran, while post-poll alignments and independents proved decisive in some contests. In Pali, BJP's Namita Bubakia was elected mayor with 33 votes despite the Congress emerging as the largest party in the 65-member municipal corporation after the ward elections. Independent candidate Rajbala Hingad received 29 votes and Congress's Sumitra Jain three. All 65 councillors voted. In Barmer Municipal Council, BJP's Gautam Bobby won the chairman's post with 35 votes against 20 for the Congress candidate, with one vote cross-voted. The council had 29 BJP, 21 Congress and five independent councillors after the ward elections. In Balotra, BJP's Yogesh Gehlot was elected chairman with 30 votes against 25 for Congress candidate Ankita. Independent candidate Mukesh was also in the contest. At Guda Malani municipality in Balotra district, BJP's Sheetal Bharat Jain was elected chairperson after the party won 13 of 20 wards, against Congress's seven. At Samdari, BJP's Suresh Kumar won with 17 votes against Congress's Vikram Bunkar, who secured eight. The BJP had won 14 of the 25 wards. The BJP also won in Sojat City, where Kirti secured 25 votes against Congress's Balmukan's nine, and Sojat Road, where Bhavna Dhanja was elected chairperson with 18 votes, backed by 14 BJP councillors and four independents. Congress's Devendra Panwar received seven. In Marwar Junction, BJP's Devaram defeated Congress's Manohar Lal by two votes. Rani Khurd saw a tie between BJP's Babulal and Congress's Virendra Singh. In Sadri, BJP's Sanjay Kumar Bohra defeated independent Raju Hamirmal Saha by 17 votes, while BJP's Devi Bai was elected unopposed in Bali. In Jaisalmer, BJP's Vijay Dangra defeated Congress's Nirmal Purohit 27-18. BJP's Sunil Acharya won in Mount Abu 19-6, Purushottam Dave won Sanchore 23-12, Mohanlal won Sayla 19-6 and Manoj Gupta won Bhinmal 24-16. The Congress won Pokaran, where Kalpana Ranga was elected chairperson after the party won 14 of 25 wards, and Sirohi, where Ritu Jain secured 30 of 35 votes.
