Ajmer, Sept. 16 -- The BJP's 36-year control over the Ajmer Municipal Corporation has come to an end, with a fractured verdict exposing growing discontent against the party at the grassroots. Alleged corruption, poor sanitation, bad roads, parking and streetlight issues, dissatisfaction with elected representatives, inadequate delivery of government schemes and controversial delimitation are being cited among the key factors behind the BJP's setback. The BJP suffered its biggest losses in Ajmer South assembly constituency, where rebels and disgruntled aspirants denied tickets hurt the party's prospects. In wards 28, 36 and 43, BJP rebels mounted strong challenges and pushed the party's official candidates to third place. Several other wards also witnessed BJP leaders contesting as Independents after being denied tickets, splitting the party's vote. As a result, the BJP won only nine of the 41 wards in South, compared with 22 of the 37 wards in North. BJP city president Ramesh Soni acknowledged that the BJP's poor performance in South and the conduct of elected representatives towards voters and party workers were significant factors.
