BJP launches campaign to counter Cong
Jaipur, Oct. 23 -- The state BJP unit on Thursday launched a fortnight-long campaign to counter the Congress's allegations regarding nationwide irregularities in the conduct of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and promote its position on voter eligibility and the ills associated with alleged illegal immigration.
The campaign, titled "Save Democracy, Eliminate Mobocracy" will extend from October 22 to November 5, and will involve marches at district headquarters, discussions in assembly constituencies, youth outreach programmes at educational institutions and outreach through press conferences and social media.
The move comesamid recent unrest and nationwide protests regarding the exercise as well as allegations of internal discrepancies in the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI), led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The BJP's national leadership as well as party leaders across states have long maintained that one of the key objectives of the SIR exercise was to root out alleged illegal infiltrators across the country.
Speaking to reporters, BJP state general secretary Shravan Singh Bagdi accused the Congress of misleading people about the revision exercise and said the campaign would address questions about electoral rolls, citizenship and voting rights. "Congress has attempted to create a narrative around several issues, including SIR. Through this campaign, we will counter that narrative and explain our position to the public," Bagdi said.
He said the campaign would focus on ensuring that eligible citizens' names were included in electoral rolls, responding to the opposition's objections to SIR and presenting the BJP's position on illegal immigration.
"The campaign is not limited to political allegations and counter-allegations. It also aims to communicate the importance of accurate electoral rolls and strengthen public faith in the democratic system," he said.
Bagdi alleged that the opposition was spreading misleading information about SIR and adopting double standards on illegal immigration. "Only citizens have the right to vote in the country. Infiltrators should not have the right to elect the government," he said. The party has appointed a state-level coordinator and co-coordinators and formed separate teams to oversee the activities.
Under its "Rashtra Chintan Samvad" programme, the BJP plans to hold discussions in every assembly constituency between October 23 and 31. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, professors, businesspeople, social workers and young people will be invited to participate.
Youth dialogues themed "Democracy vs Mobocracy" are planned at colleges, universities, industrial training institutes and other educational institutions. These will cover electoral fairness, citizenship, SIR and constitutional values. The party also plans student competitions on democracy and related subjects.
Suman Sharma, coordinator of the campaign's "Remove Infiltrators, Save Democracy" segment, said outreach would extend from the state level to districts and constituencies. This component would focus on the party's position on illegal immigration and its alleged implications for electoral rolls.
The BJP will also circulate articles, booklets, pamphlets and special publications, alongside social media outreach, as part of the campaign.
Rukshmani Kumari, state president of All India Professionals Congress, which operates under the Congress umbrella, said that the BJP "must understand that dissent is essential to democracy."
"Dismissing it (dissent) as bheedtantra (mobocracy) undermines democratic debate. Congress always stands for transparent electoral rolls and every eligible citizen's right to vote. Professionals and youth will not be taken in by another BJP 'jumla', they deserve jobs, opportunities and accountability. Genuine dialogue must welcome questions and scrutiny,"she said....
