Jaipur, Sept. 16 -- The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged on top in Rajasthan's 2026 urban local body elections, however the statewide vote share tells a far more closely fought story: the ruling party led the Congress by just 0.94 percentage points. Across 309 urban local bodies and 10,244 wards, the BJP secured 35.18% of the votes against 34.24% for the Congress, underlining how evenly matched the two principal political forces remain at the grassroots. The margin is the second narrowest between the BJP and Congress in Rajasthan's civic elections since 2019. Only the 2021 polls were closer, when the Congress led the BJP by 0.67 percentage points - 34.23% against 33.56%. The 2026 result therefore marks a sharp contrast with the BJP's stronger performance in the 2020 municipal elections, when it polled 42.49% against the Congress's 37.28%, a lead of 5.21 points. Even in the 2020 elections to the Jaipur, Jodhpur and Kota municipal corporations, the Congress held a 2.27-point advantage over the BJP, polling 40.08% against 37.81%. The latest result shows the political pendulum swinging back towards the BJP, but only marginally. After the BJP's five-point-plus advantage in 2020 disappeared by 2021, the two parties have since remained separated by less than one percentage point in statewide civic vote share. The numbers suggest that while the BJP can claim the top position, the result does not amount to a sweeping statewide mandate. For the Congress, the narrow gap provides some political reassurance. The BJP's 2026 vote share is also substantially below the 42.49% it secured in the 2020 municipalities and municipal councils elections. Political analyst Manish Godha said the "near-dead heat" between the two parties becomes even more significant in the context of the independent vote, which accounted for more than a quarter of the statewide vote. "This indicates that the civic contest was not simply a two-party battle. Local candidates, rebel nominees and independent contestants continued to command a substantial share of the electorate, potentially influencing outcomes in closely fought wards." He said for the BJP, the result provides a political talking point ahead of the next major electoral battles: it has regained the top statewide civic vote share after the Congress's narrow lead in 2021....
