Bhim Army chief meets victims' kin, stages stir
Jaipur, Aug. 22 -- Following the acquittal of all 40 accused in the 2015 Dangawas massacre case in which five Dalits were killed, Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad, along with hundreds of activists, staged a protest at the Martyrs' Memorial in Jaipur on Friday.
The special SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Cases and Sessions Court in Merta acquitted all the accused in the case on August 5, citing weak testimonies and a lack of evidence.
After meeting the victims' family members, Chandrashekhar protested the verdict, saying, "Some incidents are painful and leave deep wounds. The Dangawas incident is one of them. Even the country's premier investigating agency, the CBI, failed to gather sufficient evidence. Why did this happen?"
"To ensure that a massacre like Dangawas is never repeated, we must crush feudal thinking underfoot because this is a democracy," he said. He said stronger legal representation could have helped secure justice for the victims.
He also announced a foot march. "We will travel on foot from Dangawas to Jaipur... I was going to raise my voice in Parliament, but the House did not function."
Meanwhile, the Rajasthan government has initiated the process of challenging the Merta special court's August 5 verdict acquitting all 40 accused in the Rajasthan high court.
Home (law) secretary Anjali Rajoria has written to the Inspector General of the CBI, asking it to file an appeal against the verdict. "The Judge, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, in his decision dated 05.08.2026, has acquitted the accused in the Dangawas case. Please take the necessary steps to file an appeal before the Hon'ble Rajasthan High Court in this case," the letter stated....
