Barmer stir intensifies after MLA Bhati joins
Barmer, May 7 -- The protest against lignite mining operations in Giral village intensified on Tuesday night after Sheo MLA Ravindra Singh Bhati joined agitating farmers and spent the night at the protest site, signalling a notable show of political support.
The protest, which has continued since April 9, is being led by farmers and local youth affected by land acquisition and employment issues linked to mining activities of Rajasthan State Mines and Minerals Limited in Giral and nearby areas, including Thumbli. Protesters allege the company had promised jobs to local residents but recently terminated several youths, triggering widespread anger.
Bhati reached the protest site on Tuesday evening, addressed the gathering and later joined the sit-in. He said he would continue to stand with the protesters until their demands are met. His overnight stay has added momentum to the agitation and increased pressure on the authorities and the mining company.
During his address, the MLA questioned whether rules and regulations were being followed in the mining operations. He alleged that mandatory safety measures, such as proper fencing around mining areas to prevent accidents involving humans and animals, had not been implemented. He also accused the company of dumping mining waste on agricultural land, causing damage to crops and affecting soil quality.
Raising environmental concerns, Bhati claimed that incorrect information was presented in the Assembly regarding plantation in mining-affected areas. He said that while official records mention the plantation of thousands of trees, the situation on the ground does not support those claims.
He also criticised the lack of response from RSMML officials and contractors, saying that no one has come forward to hold talks with the protesting farmers even after weeks of agitation. RSMML officials were not available for comment when contacted....
