Jaipur, Feb. 11 -- Congress national general secretary and Tonk MLA Sachin Pilot on Tuesday expressed concern over rising political hostility, saying electoral competition in the country is increasingly turning into hatred and confrontation, which is not a healthy sign for democracy. "People belonging to different ideologies contest elections, but today competition is getting converted into hatred. The animosity and tension we are witnessing in politics is not a good sign. If everyone becomes an enemy in a democracy, how will consensus be built?" he said. Pilot was addressing the inauguration ceremony of a "free assistive devices distribution camp for persons with disabilities", organised in Tonk with the support of the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti on the birth anniversary of former Union minister and farmer leader late Rajesh Pilot. He said, "Democracy thrives on healthy debate, criticism and accountability." Traditionally, the opposition has played the role of questioning the government, setting benchmarks and holding those in power responsible. A strong opposition, he added, is essential for a vibrant and functional democracy. However, he cautioned that the present atmosphere of confrontation and suppression in politics strays from democratic values and could undermine institutions if left unchecked. Pilot also emphasised the importance of social service and aiding underprivileged communities.
