JODHPUR, Sept. 28 -- Resident doctors at AIIMS Jodhpur on Sunday called off their four-day strike - which followed a first-year anaesthesia student's alleged suicide - after the Union health ministry ordered the institute's executive director Dr Goverdhan Dutt Puri to report to the ministry with immediate effect and handed additional charge of the post to AIIMS Jammu executive director Prof (Dr) Sanjeev Sinha. AIIMS spokesperson Jeewanram Bishnoi confirmed the resident doctors ended their strike following the Centre's order. The decision came after multiple rounds of talks between Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and the doctors. The order said the administrative arrangements were being made to facilitate the restoration of normal academic and institutional functioning and to ensure that the concerns of students, patients and other stakeholders were appropriately addressed. It has also directed that a five-member committee of AIIMS Jodhpur faculty be constituted within five days to provide institutional support to Sinha and facilitate coordinated action on patient care, resident and student welfare, the academic environment and related matters. The strike began after the alleged suicide of a first-year anaesthesia resident on September 22. The protesting doctors had sought, among other demands, the resignation of Puri and compensation of Rs.5 crore for deceased's family.
