After Barmer, ragging claims surface at Pali medical college
Barmer/Pali, Nov. 6 -- Allegations of ragging have surfaced at Maharana Pratap Medical College near Ramasia in Pali district, where first-year MBBS students have accused senior students of harassment, intimidation and humiliation.
In an anonymous complaint to the National Medical Commission (NMC), the students alleged that they were called into a room, asked to remove their clothes and forced to dance while on video calls.
According to the complaint, the juniors were also threatened with consequences if they did not keep their heads bowed in front of seniors and address them as "Boss" every morning and evening. When they refused to remove their clothes, the seniors allegedly abused them.
People aware of the matter said that the complainants had also attached photographs to their complaints.
The NMC received the complaint on October 24 and sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the college within 24 hours. However, 12 days later, no disciplinary action had allegedly been taken.
They added that the college management closed the file without taking action, citing the need to protect the complainants' identities, and the allegations have created an atmosphere of fear among first-year MBBS students.
The incidents took place after regular academic activities resumed for senior students.
On the NMC's directions, the college had suspended classes for senior batches from September 28 to October 12 to protect newly admitted first-year students from ragging.
However, the latest allegations suggest that ragging resumed after October 12, during a Navratri Dandiya event organised at the college.
College principal OP Suthar said the management had received an email containing the allegations, but it did not name the students responsible.
"We have received the email, but the names of the students making the complaint have not been mentioned. In such circumstances, against whom should we take action?" he said.
Suthar added that security guards had been instructed to remain vigilant to ensure students' safety and that the Anti-Ragging Committee had also been put on alert.
Maharana Pratap Medical College has faced ragging allegations in the past as well. In 2022, a serious incident involving students from the 2018 and 2019 batches and juniors from the 2020 batch came to light.
Seniors allegedly forced juniors to assume the "murga" (rooster) position and assaulted them. Several students were allegedly kicked in their private parts, leaving one student unconscious. After the incident, the college suspended 14 students from the 2018 batch, 25 from the 2019 batch and nine from the 2020 batch.
A similar case recently came to light at Barmer Medical College, where the administration took disciplinary action against 80 senior MBBS students, including 15 women, following complaints by first-year students.
Announced on October 30, the action included the expulsion of 13 students from the hostel. Others faced suspension from academic activities for varying periods and a one-year ban on participating in cultural and sports activities.
The inquiry reportedly found that seniors demanded introductions from juniors, used abusive language in WhatsApp chats and shared objectionable content on social media. The college submitted its inquiry report to NMC on October 29....
