9-yr-old's body pulled out after 39-hour op
Jaipur/Phalodi, Oct. 18 -- The body of a nine-year-old boy who fell into a 1,050-foot-deep borewell in Phalodi district on Thursday was pulled out after a 39-hour rescue operation early on Saturday, officials said, adding that he was rushed to a government hospital in Lohawat, where doctors declared him dead.
The incident occurred on Thursday at around 12.30 pm in Nosar village under the Lohawat region when the child, Bhomaram, son of farmer Pancharam Bhil, fell into an open borewell while playing near his family's agricultural field.
According to police, the borewell pump had a technical fault and was removed for repairs, leaving the shaft open. The child reportedly fell into the narrow borewell and became trapped at approximately 640 feet.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local administration launched a joint rescue operation that continued through Thursday and Friday before concluding at 3.30am on Saturday.
Officials said, rescuers faced several challenges, including the extreme depth of the borewell, large rocks obstructing access to the child and water accumulation inside the shaft. Efforts were also made to dig a parallel shaft using heavy machinery, but unstable soil and technical difficulties slowed the operation.
After nearly 39 hours of continuous efforts, rescuers managed to retrieve the child around 3.30 am on Saturday. He was immediately taken by ambulance to the government hospital in Lohawat, but doctors declared him dead.
The incident has left the family devastated and cast a pall of gloom over the village.
The tragedy comes less than two months after a similar incident in Alwar district. On August 31, a nine-year-old boy fell into an open borewell while attempting to retrieve a kite in Butoli village. However, rescue teams managed to bring him out safely after a five-hour operation....
