7-yr-old, mother drown in pond while clicking selfies in bikaner
Barmer, June 22 -- A seven-year-old boy drowned in a farm pond in Rajasthan's Barmer district on Sunday, and his 30-year-old mother also drowned attempting to rescue him, police said.
According to the police, Jiyo Devi had clicked a selfie with her son and was preparing for another photograph when she put the child down. He accidentally slipped into the deep water, and she immediately dived in to rescue him. "However, due to the depth of the water, both drowned," said Sadar police Station House Officer Kartar Singh.
The incident occurred at about 10:30 am in Bano Ki Beri Doodh village in the Sadar police station area.
Residents raised the alarm after hearing screams. Villagers, police and the Civil Defence team launched a rescue operation. Initial efforts to retrieve the bodies were hampered by the pond's depth, and an earthmover was used to partially drain the pond by breaching one of its walls.
"With the assistance of locals and the Civil Defence team, the bodies were recovered after nearly three hours and shifted to the mortuary of Dhorimanna Hospital. Further proceedings will be carried out after the arrival of the deceased woman's in-laws," Kartar Singh said....
