6 'panchayat members' booked for boycotting family's weddings: Cops
Barmer, April 24 -- Police have booked a six people in Jalore district for posing as self-styled panchayat members and imposing a social boycott against a family, isolating their children from pre-wedding rituals, officers said.
According to police, the incident happened at a village in Bhinmal where two sisters were set to marry on April 20 and their brother on April 21. The family alleged that individuals named Samratharam, Deeparam, Babulal, Jagdish, Somtaram, Sardararam, and Mangilal organised an illegal gathering and declared a full social boycott against their wedding.
On Monday, the two sisters complained to Bhinmal police that their Bindori procession (a vital wedding cremony), which was scheduled for the day, could not proceed as villagers, gripped by fear, stayed away due to threats from the panchayat.
The panchayat warned that any villager attending the weddings would face expulsion from the community and heavy fines, sowing widespread fear, the family said.
The dispute began on August 26, 2025, over a nephew's live-in relationship. The panchayat allegedly fined the family Rs.31 lakh and imposed an additional Rs.4 lakh penalty on a relative for supporting him. It also ordered the social exclusion of the nephew and another relative.
Although a case is already registered, the family claims there was pressure to withdraw it amid ongoing threats. With no villagers attending the ceremonies, they approached police for protection.
Station house officer Rajendra Singh said a case has been registered against the accused and that deputy superintendent of police Shankarlal Mansuriya is investigating the matter. He added that police have received the fresh complaint....
