5 women whose kidneys failed after C-sections plead for transplant
Jaipur, July 14 -- The five patients whose kidneys allegedly failed following Caesarean deliveries at a government hospital in Kota have urged the Rajasthan government to either arrange kidney transplants for them or "give them poison", saying that they can no longer bear the physical and mental trauma of lifelong dialysis.
The five women, Ragini Meena, Aarti Choubdar, Pinky, Sushila and Dhanni Suman, remain admitted to the hospital more than 70 days after their deliveries. Their families allege that negligence by the hospital and the use of counterfeit medicines led to irreversible kidney damage.
In a memorandum submitted to the Kota district collector, the patients and their attendants stated that if the government fails to take a decision on kidney transplantation within 48 hours, the women will stop undergoing dialysis, even if it costs them their lives.
"We are exhausted by dialysis every alternate day. It is causing unbearable physical and mental suffering. All five of us have suffered complete kidney failure and have been told we will need dialysis for the rest of our lives. The negligence was not ours-it was the hospital's. Yet it is our families who are paying the price," the memorandum, signed by the patients, states.
The families said the women were admitted for deliveries between May 4 and May 8.
Ragini Meena's brother, Vikas, said his sister has spent the last 70 days in hospital.
"Why should we suffer for someone else's negligence? We have given the government an ultimatum because our patients no longer want to depend on dialysis for the rest of their lives. If kidney transplants are not arranged, they will refuse further dialysis and remain in the hospital," he said.
Kota district collector did not give a response to HT's query....
