5 injured in gas leak at atomic power unit
Udaipur, Oct. 26 -- A gas leak incident occurred at the Heavy Water Plant located within the Rawatbhata Atomic Power Station in Chittorgarh district on Saturday, officials said, adding that the leak involved H2S (Hydrogen Sulphide) gas, exposing one departmental employee and four contractual workers, all of whom sustained burn injuries, people aware of the matter said.
According to initial reports, the gas started leaking suddenly while maintenance work was underway inside the plant. The injured were immediately rushed to the Atomic Power Hospital, while two of them, in serious condition, were referred to Kota for advanced treatment.
General manager of the Heavy Water Plant, P Satish, said, "All employees were working in the field when the incident occurred. It was when the gas cylinder lying inside a closed room suddenly leaked. The situation is now under control, both the victims including the supervisor and the contractual employee were sent to Kota for further treatment and safety measures were promptly activated." He added that three of the affected workers are in stable condition.
Following the incident, senior officials and emergency response teams reached the leak site.
The exact cause of the gas leak is still being investigated, though plant authorities have assured that operations are safe and stable....
