Jaipur, Aug. 9 -- Five people, including a contractor, have been arrested for allegedly embezzling valuables worth several lakhs that were discovered during the demolition of an old mansion in Jaipur's Tripolia Bazaar area, police said on Saturday, adding that the accused allegedly failed to hand over the recovered valuables to the property owner or inform the authorities, as required under law. Manak Chowk Police Station SHO Rakesh Khyaaliya told HT that a case was registered on July 15, 2026, following a complaint by Rahul Sethi, the owner of a house located in Vidyadhar Ka Rasta, Tripolia Bazaar. Sethi had hired contractor Mahesh Malhotra, alias Chhotu, to demolish the old structure and construct a new building. According to the complaint, Sethi had clearly instructed the contractor that if any valuables, cash, or hidden articles were found during the demolition, they were to be handed over to him immediately. However, police said that when a cache of valuables was allegedly discovered inside the mansion, the contractor and his associates misappropriated the items instead of informing the owner or the government. The alleged embezzlement came to light after one of the labourers, reportedly upset over not receiving his share, informed the complainant, police said. Sethi subsequently recorded a video related to the incident and approached the police. The complaint alleges that the accused recovered around 10-15 silver bars weighing nearly 40-45 kg, 14-15 gold urns containing gold coins, around 8,000-10,000 old silver coins, and other valuables from the property. The contractor allegedly shared the valuables with his associates - Anuj, Jagdish, Rajni, Rehan, Sultan (driver), and Pappu Ajmera. Deputy commissioner of police (Jaipur North) Karan Sharma said a special investigation team was constituted to verify the allegations and identify those involved. During the investigation, police on Friday arrested the five accused and recovered two large silver bars weighing a total of 66.4 kg, which were seized.
