Jaipur, Feb. 8 -- Over 40,000 schools in the state lack a functional tap water connection, the Jal Jeevan Mission's (JJM) latest status report has revealed. According to the data, Rajasthan has 99,737 schools in total- out of which 42,136 lack proper water supply. Among the schools where water supply is available, it extends to the toilets in only 45,363 schools. The report ranked Rajasthan's progress under the scheme as among the lowest in the country, with Odisha, West Bengal, Meghalaya and Madhya Pradesh outperforming by small margins. A district-wise classification revealed that Churu was the only district to have ensured all schools were covered under JJM. Didwana-Kuchaman district also displayed significant progress in this regard, with 2,079 out of 2,089 schools in the district covered under the mission. More populous districts such as Jodhpur and Jaipur performed poorly, with only 220 out of 4,238 schools in Jodhpur covered. The data also shows that 15,126 schools in the state have arrangements for rainwater harvesting in addition to water supply, and 5,761 employ a system of reusing grey water It also showed that only 53% of the state's anganwadi centres were covered under the scheme, and only 17,191 of these have functional water supply in their toilets. According to the data, Jodhpur again had the lowest number, with only 111 (4.94%) out of 2,245 anganwadi centres covered. Rajasthan is also among the worst-performing states in terms of tap water connection in households. The district-wise break-up showed that only 21.27% of Barmer's households had a tap water connection installed under JJM, followed by 27.80% in Deeg, 28.94% in Chittorgarh and 32.15% in Dungarpur. "The scheme's slow progress in some parts of Rajasthan is mainly due to its vast geographical area. Moreover, the department has traced a slew of irregularities in the scheme's implementation over the last few years, which also interrupted JJM's progress in Rajasthan. However, the state is taking small steps to fulfil its targets by 2027," said a senior PHED official....
