1st Sistan Sand Boa in India reported in Raj
JODHPUR, June 18 -- A sand boa species previously known from Iran and Pakistan has been recorded in India for the first time, with three live snakes documented from the Thar Desert region of Rajasthan, according to a new field study.
The findings were reported by Vivek Sharma, a freelance conservation biologist and Dharmendra Khandal, conservation biologist associated with Tiger Watch. According to the paper, the records are based on three live specimens of Eryx sistanensis, a sand boa species, in Ramgarh-Shekhawati area of Sikar between August and September 2025. The snakes were found in human-influenced habitats.
