Jaipur, April 8 -- At least 14 more children suffering from an unknown illness were hospitalised on Tuesday in Salumber, officials said, adding that they showed similar symptoms to the five children, all aged 2 to 4 years, who died over the past five days in Ghata and Lalpura villages. Two health teams are working to identify the cause of the illness and contain its spread across Ghata gram panchayat, officials said. Block chief health and medical officer Dr Sintu Kumawat said, "Two teams of health officials from Udaipur and Jaipur arrived in Salumber on Tuesday after the illness spread across the city, claiming five lives. They have collected blood, stool, and saliva samples from the children (up to 10 years old) from over 250 households under the Ghata gram panchayat. During the survey, we also found 14 children with similar symptoms, who were immediately referred to the local community health centre and the RNT Hospital in Udaipur for treatment. We are monitoring their condition and analysing it to identify the disease." Local MLA Thavar Chand Meena visited the patients on Tuesday. He told HT, "Although these were the first deaths, this issue has been rising for the last month. Some families did not visit the doctor in time due to superstition. I had a word with the collector and SDM as well, and asked them to conduct some awareness programme. They also needed to convince the families to allow an autopsy. But they failed." On Tuesday, the health department dispatched two teams to investigate the illness. An official statement said, "The department formed a special team comprising some doctors from the Udaipur RNT Medical College who have been tasked to visit the affected village, while another team from the Jaipur health directorate was also sent to visit other nearby villages to trace the kids suffering from fever or with similar symptoms. It could be some viral infection. But we are not sure yet."...
