10,920 MW boost to power generation capacity in Raj
Jaipur, Oct. 24 -- Rajasthan has added 10,920 MW to its power generation capacity in the first 34 months of the Bhajan Lal Sharma-led BJP government, nearly five times the addition recorded during the corresponding period of the previous Congress government, according to a state government release on Friday.
The government has also reported an addition of 28,303 MW in solar power capacity during the period, compared with 3,985 MW in the first 34 months of the previous Congress regime and 14,878 MW during its full five-year tenure. However, the capacity additions do not, by themselves, establish how much electricity is generated, supplied or available to consumers at any given time.
The figures, released by the state government as part of its assessment of the energy sector, are being cited as evidence of a faster expansion of generation capacity, particularly in renewable energy, alongside investments in transmission infrastructure. Chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma said, "The government is working to make Rajasthan self-reliant in energy, harness its substantial solar potential and develop infrastructure to meet future demand." He attributed the increase in power and solar capacity to the implementation of the government's policies and roadmap.
Power generation capacity available for the state's use increased by 10,920 MW during the BJP government's first 34 months. The previous Congress government added 3,958 MW during its first 34 months and its entire five-year tenure, the figures cited by government show.
In solar capacity addition, the BJP government recorded an increase of 28,303 MW in solar capacity over 34 months, against 3,985 MW in the Congress government's first 34 months. The Congress regime added 14,878 MW over five years, according to the data in the release.
Alongside generation, the government has highlighted the expansion of the transmission network, arguing that additional generation capacity must be backed by infrastructure capable of carrying electricity to consumers.
During its first 34 months, the BJP government established two 400-kV grid substations, nine 220-kV substations and 51 132-kV substations, the government said. During the previous Congress government's five-year tenure, one 400-kV, five 220-kV and 38 132-kV grid substations were established, it said.
The government also reported the installation of 532 33-kV substations during its tenure so far, compared with 477 during the first 34 months of the previous government.
Rajasthan's substantial solar potential has made the development of grid infrastructure particularly important as more solar capacity is added.
CM Sharma said farmers in 26 districts were receiving electricity during two daytime blocks, while the government was working to ensure quality power supply from towns to rural settlements. The government has also highlighted Rajasthan's performance under the Centre's PM-KUSUM scheme, which promotes decentralised solar power, including solarisation of agricultural pumps and the development of decentralised renewable energy projects.
According to the state government, Rajasthan has installed 5.57 GW of decentralised solar capacity under the scheme, the highest among states, benefiting more than 378,000 farmers.
The scheme's wider impact will depend on the reliability of installations, their utilisation and the extent to which farmers can access the benefits.
The government has also pointed to an improvement in the financial performance of state power distribution companies, or discoms. Ajmer Discom reported a profit of Rs.825 crore in the financial year 2023-24, while Jaipur Discom recorded a profit of Rs.931 crore in 2025-26, according to the government.
It offers an indication of improvement in the performance of individual distribution companies, although a comprehensive assessment of the sector would also require examining financial position of all three discoms, their accumulated losses and outstanding liabilities....
