Jaipur, Sept. 8 -- Torrential rains over the weekend killed three people and caused severe damage across the state, even as the met department has forecast sustained rainfall activity in Barmer, Jaisalmer and Jalore till September 8, officials said on Sunday. Pali district reported two men missing after they were swept away in the Bandi river during a Ganesh visarjan ceremony, while Bhilwara reported the death of one person by drowning, officials said,adding that flood-like conditions also triggered house collapses and road blockades. A search operation for the two missing is underway, officials said. Authorities opened dam gates in Kota to manage water levels. However, the Met department has forecast that though rainfall activity will continue in Barmer, Jalore, and Jaisalmer till September 8, it is expected to ease across most parts of the state in the coming week. The Hemawas dam near Pali is overflowing, with water running a foot above its 28-feet capacity. The Bandi river is flowing furiously over the culvert between Jaitpur and Garhwada. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the well-marked low-pressure area over southern Rajasthan has intensified into a depression, extending into Gujarat. This system has caused extremely heavy rains in southern Rajasthan in the last 24 hours, with Sanchore in Jalore recording the highest rainfall at 210 mm.
