'Trouble engine' govt's budget: Cong slams decline in expenditure
Jaipur, Feb. 12 -- Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday criticised the state Budget 2026-27 presented in the Assembly, calling it "disappointing" and alleging that it has created uncertainty among the public about the future.
In a statement, Gehlot said the BJP government had failed to make any major announcement in the wider public interest and claimed that "every section of society will feel disheartened" after the budget. Gehlot also expressed concern over the absence of a hike in social security pensions, saying over 9 million beneficiaries would be disappointed. He further criticised the lack of major government job announcements, questioned the proposed State Testing Agency, and termed the non-restoration of the Annapurna ration kit scheme "unfortunate," alleging that several sections, including employees and journalists, had been ignored.
The opposition Congress also slammed the FY 2026-27 budget for Rajasthan, as that of a "trouble engine" government, claiming that expenditure has declined in several key sectors.
Addressing a press conference after the announcement of the budget, the leader of opposition, Tikaram Jully, said, "This budget is not only misleading but also reflects a narrow and insensitive mindset of this government. They call themselves a double engine government but the budget does not reflect that mindset. When they don't have a plan for the next two years, they are making people dream for 2047."
He said that the government was able to complete only 20% of their announcements made in the previous budget for FY 2025-26 while the works for the rest have not even started. "This government also has a huge burden of debts and other fiscal responsibilities that no government had in the last 50 years in Rajasthan. In such a situation, how did the government come up with a figure of making the state a $4.3 trillion economy? Who analysed this data? What are the data that shows this could be a possible figure?" Jully questioned.
The data from the budget documents this year revealed Rajasthan's debts and other fiscal responsibility was estimated at 36.8% of the GSDP for FY 2026-27 which was estimated at 36.5% in FY 2025-26.
Referring to some key areas, the Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra also said that the government has not spent what they budgeted in the previous year while also cut the expenditure of many key sectors which were a need of the hour.
"...A (school) building collapsed last week. But this government, in this budget, has announced only Rs.550 crores for only 2,500 school buildings," he said.
He also slammed the government for failing to preserve the integrity of the recruitment procedures in the state. "The government could not yet reform the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) while they have now announced plans to set up a state testing agency (STA) in line with the NTA. If they are actually concerned about maintaining the integrity of the exams, why are they not launching a probe into the exams conducted through OMR-sheets in the last two years?..." Dotasra said that this budget has ultimately paved the Congress's way to win in the 2028 assembly election....
