'Operation 80 Feet' to ease wider traffic woes
Jaipur, June 16 -- The Jaipur Development Authority's (JDA) high-profile "Operation 80 Feet", which has drawn national attention, is only the beginning of a much larger urban redevelopment and traffic management exercise set to reshape connectivity across the Tonk Road-Jagatpura-Sitapura belt, officials said.
The demolition drive - conducted under heavy security and amid internet restrictions in sensitive parts of Jaipur on June 8 - saw the removal of five religious structures along a key road in Jagatpura. Authorities sealed off the site during the operation and did not allow public access.
Despite the extensive demolition, nine structures along the stretch remain untouched due to court-issued stay orders. JDA officials said property owners have been asked to get the stays vacated themselves, failing which the authority may move the court to seek their removal.
Officials said the recent road-widening exercise is not merely aimed at improving a single stretch of road. Instead, it forms part of a comprehensive plan to redesign traffic movement in south-eastern Jaipur by shifting a significant portion of traffic away from the heavily congested Tonk Road corridor, they added.
Tonk Road remains one of Jaipur's busiest arterial routes, carrying both city traffic and vehicles heading towards Tonk and other southern districts. To reduce pressure on the corridor, JDA has prepared a traffic diversion strategy under which motorists travelling towards Tonk will eventually be able to bypass crowded sections of Tonk Road by using Mahal Road and crossing through Sitapura before rejoining the highway, an official said, requesting anonymity.
To facilitate the shift, the authority plans to remove encroachments and widen multiple roads connecting Malviya Nagar, Jagatpura, Sitapura and the Tonk Road corridor.
Officials said dozens of roads linking the B-2 Bypass area, Jagatpura and Sitapura are expected to come under the ambit of Operation 80 Feet.
Many of these roads pass through densely populated residential colonies, meaning a large section of Jaipur's population could be affected by the redevelopment works. While officials maintain that encroachments on several stretches are not extensive, demolition and clearance activity will still be required to achieve the planned road widths....
