'For 30 months, BJP stalled women quota law implementation'
Jaipur, April 22 -- All India Women's Congress chief Alka Lamba on Tuesday accused the BJP-led central government of harbouring an "anti-women mindset" by delaying implementation of the women's reservation law, calling it a deliberate ploy to sideline female representation.
Addressing journalists at the state Congress headquarters, Lamba said a recent Mahila Congress protest in Jaipur targeted the "double-engine BJP government" and its stance on women's representation.
"The Centre called a special session of Parliament on April 16-18 not to debate women's reservation, but to ram through a delimitation-related amendment bill without consulting the Opposition. Opposition parties had demanded an all-party meeting and a draft of the delimitation proposal before the session, but the government refused. Congress also urged holding the session after elections in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu to ensure MP participation, to no avail," said Lamba.
Citing an article by Sonia Gandhi, Lamba said, "The special session was "diverted" from women's reservation to delimitation, despite the unanimous passage of the women's quota law-Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam-in 2023."
Lamba accused the Centre of stalling the law, which promises representation for half the population . "Despite all parties demanding immediate notification after passage, the government issued it only on April 16, 2026-almost 30 months later," she said, adding that this delay exposed the BJP's "real face" on women's issues.
She further alleged the government attached conditions-tying implementation to a fresh census and delimitation-that have blocked rollout. "If the law had been implemented immediately, around 180 out of 543 Lok Sabha seats could have been reserved for women in the 2024 elections," she said.
Lamba accused the Centre of pursuing delimitation without updated census data, aiming to expand Lok Sabha seats to 850 for "political gains" and reshape the country's political geography. She claimed this would harm southern and northeastern states.
The Opposition bloc united to thwart what she called an "arbitrary delimitation attempt" in Parliament, dealing the BJP a rare setback....
