Mussoorie, July 30 -- Heavy rainfall triggered landslides and rockfalls across the state on Wednesday, temporarily blocking the Yamunotri Highway and the Kedarnath pedestrian route for pilgrims, officials said The Kedarnath pedestrian Yatra route was blocked after a landslide deposited debris near Choti Lincholi. The Public Works Department (PWD) deployed a seven-member team, which cleared the debris and reopened the route by 1 pm, officials said. The Yamunotri Highway (NH-134) also witnessed multiple disruptions caused by landslides, rockfalls and boulder collapses. Road clearance operations were launched at several locations, including Durbil Band, Selaibend and Paligadh. A landslide blocked the highway near Durbil Band early in the day. Officials said repairs began at around 9.47am. Debris clearance operations were subsequently launched at Selaibend at around 10.43 am. Officials said the situation at Selaibend remained challenging due to continuous rockfalls. Rudraprayag district magistrate Vishal Mishra inspected the Rudraprayag bypass tunnel connecting the Kedarnath Highway with the Badrinath Highway, after a landslide damaged the generator room's roof. He ordered officials, technical experts and geologists to conduct a detailed probe. "The structural integrity of the tunnel remains completely safe and secure, and traffic inside is operating normally," he said. The district magistrate directed the technical team and geologists to conduct a comprehensive survey to assess the stability of the affected slope. As the project remains within its defect liability period, the executing agency will undertake necessary repairs and re-execute the treatment, officials said. The geologists will submit a detailed report, based on which further technical and safety measures will be taken. In Mussoorie, the Mussoorie-Dehradun road near Paani Wala Bend remained open to light vehicles under regulated movement. Repairs on the damaged stretch were still underway, officials said. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Thursday, forecasting heavy rain at isolated parts of Bageshwar, Nainital, Champawat and Pithoragarh, along with thunderstorms and lightning. A yellow alert was issued for Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Dehradun, Pauri and Tehri, said officials aware of the matter....
