Dehradun/Rudrapur, April 11 -- Police may invoke Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) charges upon two weapon smugglers arrested in US Nagar during a recent checking drive, pending investigation into alleged links with a designated terror outfit, officers said on Friday.
Harendra Singh alias Honey and Nikhil Verma alias Ranu were arrested near Sitarganj on Wednesday during a joint checking drive under Operation Prahar by the Special Operations Group (Rudrapur) and local police.
They were produced in court on Thursday and sent to judicial custody. "We have sought police remand for further investigation," said district senior superintendent of police, Ajay Ganpati.
The accused are currently booked in a case registered under the Arms Act. Both face charges in five criminal cases each. They were caught in possession of two rifles, one revolver, two country-made pistols and 344 cartridges.
"During interrogation, they claimed they were on their way to hide weapons in the Chorgalia forest due to the ongoing crackdown under Operation Prahar. They also claimed to be involved in an interstate supply network that included Jammu and Kashmir," added the SSP.
He said that analysis of the bank account of one of the accused showed that a suspected over ground worker (OGW) linked to the banned outfit Al-Badr, transferred Rs.7 lakh to him in 2021. The accused claimed to have delivered a pistol in return for the amount, said the SSP.
"We will send a team to Jammu and Kashmir to gather information in this regard," he said, adding that the probe was underway.
