transporters in ncr to go on 3-day strike from may 21
New Delhi, May 20 -- Transporters across Delhi-NCR will suspend operations for three days starting May 21 after the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) called for a strike against a recent hike in environment compensation cess (ECC) on commercial vehicles and a proposed ban on older vehicles entering the Capital. AIMTC said more than 68 transport unions joined the strike, alleging measures by the Delhi government and the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) would impact supply chains.
Effective April 19, the cess on light commercial vehicles and two-axle trucks increased from Rs.1,400 to Rs.2,000, and on three-axle and heavier vehicles from Rs.2,600 to Rs.4,000, with a 5% annual fee hike. The CAQM has proposed banning BS-4 and older commercial vehicles from November 1. "These measures will have serious socio-economic consequences," said AIMTC president Rajender Kapoor. "We can't understand the rationale. these restrictions are not scientifically justified." AIMTC warned the three-day strike was "symbolic" but could lead to an indefinite suspension.
