Rain improves Ggm air quality, but floods roads
Gurugram, Oct. 31 -- Overnight showers brought cleaner air and cooler weather to Gurugram on Friday but also flooded several roads, slowing traffic and exposing persistent drainage problems across the city.
Residents reported waterlogging in Sector 10, along the Sector 102/102A road, on Sohna Road near Aria Mall and at Tulip Chowk in Sector 69. Rainwater accumulated on carriageways, forcing motorists to negotiate flooded stretches.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Gurugram received 30.5mm of rainfall between 8.30am on Thursday and 8.30am on Friday, followed by another 3mm until 5.30pm. District administration figures showed Pataudi received the highest rainfall at 80mm in the 24 hours ending at 8am Friday, followed by Farrukhnagar at 51mm and Sohna at 42mm. Wazirabad recorded 39mm, Badshahpur 38mm, Gurugram tehsil 27mm, and Kadipur and Harsaru 26mm each. Manesar received 18mm rain.
Residents said the low-lying Sector 102/102A road floods even during light showers. The stretch, revamped by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) last year for approximately Rs.11 crore, has begun deteriorating because of stagnant water, they alleged.
"We have repeatedly urged the civic authorities to look into the issue and come up with a permanent solution. The stretch was recently revamped, yet waterlogging continues to cause inconvenience to residents," said Sunil Sareen, a Sector 102 resident and co-convenor of the citizen-led Dwarka Expressway Gurugram Development Authority.
GMDA spokesperson Neha Sharma attributed the problem to uneven road levels. "GMDA is aware of the issue, and the road will be levelled once the GRAP period is over," she said.
Sharma said pumps had been deployed at Atul Kataria Chowk, Old Delhi Road and Old MG Road. The agency was discussing drainage improvements on Sohna Road with the National Highways Authority of India.
In Sushant Lok-1, resident Tanya Kumar said overnight rain had damaged a road in C Block, raising fresh questions about construction quality. An MCG official said the corporation would inspect the stretch and examine whether the contractor had carried out the work properly before deciding on action. "We will look into the matter, inspect whether the contractor carried out the work properly and take appropriate action after the inspection," the official said.
On Friday morning, traffic moved slowly near Rajiv Chowk, Leisure Valley Park and Tau Devi Lal Stadium. Congestion was also reported around Sadar Bazar, Khandsa Road, Sector 37, Sector 74A and Manesar.
By evening, commuters reported delays along NH-48 and roads through Udyog Vihar Phase 3, MG Road, Old Delhi Road, Cyber City, Bilaspur Kalan, Khandsa, Sikanderpur, Basai Road, Rajiv Chowk, Bakhtawar Chowk and Sohna Road.
"There was not much waterlogging on major roads, but our teams were deployed at several locations to ease traffic congestion," a senior traffic police official said.
The IMD issued an orange alert for Gurugram on Friday, forecasting light to moderate rain and thunderstorms across Haryana before dry conditions returned.
Gurugram's maximum temperature fell 5.5degC from Thursday's 25.5degC to 20degC on Friday. The minimum stood at 17.2degC, while Narnaul recorded the state's lowest minimum at 13degC. Across Haryana, the average maximum rose 0.8degC but remained 3.8degC below normal. Hisar, Sirsa and Balasmand recorded the state's highest maximum temperature of 29.3degC on Friday. Weather scientists said north-westerly winds could lower night-time temperatures over the weekend as the western disturbance weakened.
### Gurugram AQI improves
The rain also brought sharp relief from pollution. Gurugram's air quality index (AQI) fell from 243, in the 'poor' category on Thursday, to 73, in the 'satisfactory' category, at 6.30pm Friday, according to the Central Pollution Control Board's Sameer app.
Readings varied across monitoring stations: TERI Gram recorded 100 ('satisfactory'), Gwal Pahari 106 ('moderate') and Sector 51 169 ('moderate')....
