New Delhi, May 13 -- The Punjab government has sought a share in Yamuna water allocation, arguing it is also a successor state like Haryana, ahead of the renegotiation of a 1994 water-sharing agreement among riparian states. Demands were made at a northern zonal council meeting in Delhi on Monday. A senior Delhi government official, speaking anonymously, said Punjab argued that if Haryana can claim Ravi-Beas water as a successor state, Punjab should be entitled to Yamuna water. "Regardless of how the Yamuna's water is allocated, Delhi's designated quota must not be reduced. Delhi is already receiving around 225 cusecs less due to seepage and leakages," the official added. The 1994 MoU among Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan is up for renegotiation after 30 years. Punjab has previously said it was "unfairly excluded" from the MoU. A Delhi Jal Board official noted Delhi's population has risen from 10-11 million in 1994 to around 25 million now. "DJB has no objection to a re-allocation. but Delhi's quota must not be curtailed," the official said. Delhi faces a 250 mgd gap between demand (1,250 mgd) and supply, depending on neighbours for 86.5% of raw water.paras singh...
